pancrustacea

You stay in the sea. It’s still got pretty rich pickings, here in the shallows.

You settle on a pattern of three main segments, each made up of several smaller segments: head, thorax and abdomen. This leaves you pretty well protected, but still flexible enough to move around.

Equipped with your nice new mandibles, you can manipulate whatever you find, and eat it. You’re still pretty small and heavily armoured, so hunting is too hard. In the very margins of the sea, there is plenty of organic waste, but quite a lot of competition to get it. In deeper water there may be less food, but there will be less competition. When you find the odd dead fish (did we mention that fish have evolved recently?) sunk to the bottom, you’ll be the only one eating it.

What’s it going to be?

Go deep

Stay shallow
