Down in the depths, although not very deep, you may not find as much food, but you are away from your predators and able to eat enough to grow, slowly, and reproduce.

As you get bigger, though, you are more interesting as food to a new class of predator which is appearing - fish with jaws! They can crush you up and gobble you down.
